Summer Camp 2018

Science of Fun Summer Camps 2018

Our 2019 Summer camp schedule will be published January 9, 2019 and registration opens February 1, 2019 at 9:00 a.m.

Did you know our activities are new every summer? Our three summer themes stay the same (Daring Designs, Radical Reactions, and Maker’s Mania) and each summer they are redesigned with new activities. We do not repeat the prior year’s camp.

Who we are:

The Science of Fun is a highly engaging, STEM (Science Technology Engineering Mathematics) camp and afterschool enrichment company in downtown Decatur, Georgia. We encourage curiosity, experimentation, risk-taking and a growth mindset in our elementary-age campers. We believe that campers need hearty outdoor play, solid interpersonal coaching and engaging hands-on STEM activities such as slime, rockets and roller coasters. We believe in the inherent value of young children and truly enjoy their company. We know how to strike just the right balance between structure and fun. The Science of Fun is owned by Kris Webb, a former City Schools of Decatur teacher and co-founder of the non-profit Sudbury School of Atlanta. Ms. Webb graduated from Agnes Scott College and holds dual Master's Degrees in Science Education and in Educational Leadership.

What we do:

We have three recurring summer themes with different and distinct activities each summer: Daring Designs, Radical Reactions, and Maker’s Mania. We do not repeat the prior year’s activities. Activities include STEM topics, matter investigations, chemical reactions, physics explorations, engineering challenges, STEAM (STEM + Art) and Tinker Labs. Many projects are taken home by campers. All camps are ideal for ages boys and girls, repeat campers and first-time campers. Activities will be tailored to individual needs in flexible groups. No prior knowledge is necessary but advanced learners will also be mentally engaged through differentiated small group discussions and open-ended activities. Descriptions of each theme are located under the schedule, below.

Returning campers:

Returning families, your camper will be once-again thrilled with the Science of Fun camp. We do not repeat the prior year’s camp.

How do I get on the WAITLIST for summer camp sessions that are full?

The waitlist is now closed. Please visit us February 1, 2019 for next summer’s offerings.

Daring Designs 2018

Do you like to make things with your own hands and to push your imagination to its limit? Explore your creative side with hands-on STEAM (Science Technology Engineering Art Mathematics) projects such as tethered drones, solar paper bookmarks, squishy electrical circuits, homemade paper, secret messages, Lego gear design, Sphero-robot drawings, paper airplanes, and much more. Many projects are taken home at the end of each day.

Maker’s Mania 2018

Maker’s Mania is the intersection of technology and art. Sample activities are homemade “squishies” (ask your kid!), nature mobiles, LED-light projects, chemical etching, wearable creations, stuffed animal furniture, and much more. Click here to find out more about Maker culture, Decatur Makers and the Atlanta Maker Faire.

Radical Reactions 2018

Do you love mixing chemicals and making things fly across the room? Who doesn’t? This camp is all about producing chemical chaos and exploring eye-popping physics. Sample activities include moon sand, dancing cranberries soda, homemade butter, air cannons, the physics of bottle flipping, and much more.

Last days of summer 2018

A calendar anomaly gives us two last days of vacation before school starts on Wednesday, August 1. Join us for water play, field day races, ice cream, and face paint. This is summer’s final hurrah!

Cancellations and changes:

Please be advised: for planning purposes, we strictly adhere to these policies. We do not offer credit/refund/exchange for unused camp or before and aftercare for ANY reason. No transfers. Science of Fun reserves the right to cancel, change, correct, modify and update these policies at any time.

  • Before June 1: Cancellations and changes must be made at least 30 days prior to the first day of camp ($50/camper per session is non-refundable, $25 per camper administrative fee for each change, changes are subject to availability). Please limit changes to ONE change per camper. Sorry, for our sanity multiple changes are strictly prohibited.

  • June 1 and after: No changes or cancellations. No exceptions.

Social/behavioral/learning needs:

We keep an excellent staff:camper ratio of approximately 1:10. However, this camp is only appropriate for campers who can consistently work in small groups and can follow multi-step directions. This camp is NOT appropriate for situations in which a camper needs a smaller staff:camper ratio than we are realistically able to provide.

Behavior:

Behavior is rarely a problem as we have experienced supervisors and instructors, engaging activities, great campers and fun counselors. Any camper who endangers themselves or others, has behavior that is not conducive to the camp environment, or has difficulty following rules will be removed immediately, without additional warnings, without refund/credit/exchange/transfer of ANY fees, and will not be allowed to return to the Science of Fun. Please note: Historically, siblings have more behavior problems than any other campers. Siblings are held to the same high behavior expectations as all other campers; siblings who fight and argue will be removed under these same guidelines and will not be allowed to return to the Science of Fun.

Accolades:

Science of Fun was included in Atlanta Magazine’s Innovation Index which recognizes up-and-coming innovators in education.
