The Science of Fun Summer Camps 2022
We're full; see you next summer! Join the 2022 waitlist, here
We have four recurring summer themes with different activities each summer: Daring Designs, Food Fun, Radical Reactions, and Makers Mania. Campers do not repeat the prior summer’s activities because so many campers return year after year. Check out our behind-the scenes videos, here and here!
2022 COVID-19 updates, vaccinations:
In addition to our stringent 2021 protocols, our 2022 camps require that all campers and staff are fully vaccinated (2-shot vaccination series) at least two weeks prior to the first day of attendance. The Science of Fun is exceptionally proactive with COVID-19 protocols. In 2021, our camps were predominantly outside, distanced, and fully masked. We will continue to layer precautions and err on the side of extreme safety. We will post additional 2022 details under our FAQs as the CDC updates camp guidelines; however, we are more cautious and proactive than the CDC requires. In the meantime, please refer to our 2021 guidelines here. Note: We have a beautiful, large indoor space available when needed; campers are fully masked, distanced, and the space is highly ventilated.
Who we are:
The Science of Fun is a highly engaging, STEAM (Science Technology Engineering Art Mathematics) camp near downtown Decatur, Georgia. We encourage curiosity, experimentation, risk-taking, and a growth mindset in our elementary-age campers. We believe that campers need hearty outdoor play, solid interpersonal coaching, and engaging hands-on STEM activities such as slime, rockets, and roller coasters. We believe in the inherent value of young children and truly enjoy their company. We know how to strike just the right balance between structure and fun.
The Science of Fun is owned by Kris Webb, a former City Schools of Decatur teacher and co-founder of the non-profit Sudbury School of Atlanta. Ms. Webb graduated from Agnes Scott College and holds dual Master's Degrees in Science Education and in Educational Leadership. Our camps are led by Instructors and Supervisors who are experienced, highly-educated adults! Read more, here!
What we do:
We have four recurring summer themes with different and distinct activities each summer: Daring Designs, Food Fun, Radical Reactions, and Makers Mania. Campers do not repeat the prior year’s activities. Activities include STEM topics, matter investigations, chemical reactions, physics explorations, engineering challenges, STEAM (STEM + Art) and Tinker Labs. Many projects are taken home by campers. All camps are ideal for boys and girls, repeat campers and first-time campers. Descriptions of each theme are located under the schedule, below. Our camps feel like a Science birthday party!

The portion of the document below is undergoing revisions for 2022, please check back for final updates! The themes will be the same but the specific activities will be new for 2022.
Daring Designs 2021
Do you like to make things with your own hands and to push your imagination to its limit? Design incredible things this summer when you construct with thousands of Legos and K’nex, climb inside life-size forts, test marble roller coasters, and defy gravity with huge Jenga sets. Do you love Hex Bugs as much as we do? Build a habitat and take home your very own Hex Bug!
Food Fun 2021
This is a camp where you CAN play with your food! Blend homemade butter, mix homemade soda, conduct red cabbage chemistry, assemble gumdrop molecules, construct marshmallow towers, create colorful milk magic, and build electrical circuits from dough. Some labs are edible and some are not, but they all are food fun! Nut-free and gluten-free options will be available; list all food allergies in your registration.
Radical Reactions 2021
Do you love mixing chemicals and making things fly across the room? Who doesn’t? This camp is all about producing chemical chaos and exploring eye-popping physics. Mix chemicals to make a lava lamp, fling a Hex Bug payload using a catapult, power up a mouth rocket and concoct slime. This week always ends with homemade ice cream!
Maker’s Mania 2021
STEAM (Science Technology Engineering Art Mathematics) takes center stage when you design a working flashlight, create a life-size shadow puppet theatre, construct a movable-hinge creature, and use art to program robots! FAQS:
Answers to many, many questions may be found on our FAQs page. Note: this document is undergoing updates for 2022.
Payment details, Cancellations and Changes:
At registration, families only pay a non-refundable camp deposit ($50/camper per session) and a $5 non-refundable registration fee, plus any optional extended care. All camp changes ($25 admin fee) and cancellations are due before May 1. On May 1, 2022 the remaining camp tuition and 3.5% credit/debit card processing fee will be charged and all payments become non-refundable. No transfers. All camps purchased after May 1, 2022 are non-refundable “final sale” camps. See the full details, here.
Social/behavioral/learning needs:
We keep an excellent staff: camper ratio of approximately 1:10. However, this camp is only appropriate for campers who can consistently work in small groups and can follow multi-step directions. This camp is not appropriate for situations in which a camper needs a smaller staff to camper ratio than we are realistically able to provide or who typically requires an aide at school.
Behavior:
Behavior is rarely a problem as we have experienced supervisors and instructors, engaging activities, great campers, and fun counselors. Any camper who endangers themselves or others, has behavior that is not conducive to the camp environment, or has difficulty following rules will be removed immediately, without additional warnings, without refund/credit/exchange/transfer of ANY fees, and will not be allowed to return to the Science of Fun. Please note: Historically, siblings have more behavior problems than any other campers. Siblings are held to the same high behavior expectations as all other campers; siblings who fight and argue will be removed under these same guidelines and will not be allowed to return to the Science of Fun.
