Virtual summer camp 2021 "camp-in-a-box" OPEN

Science of Fun Summer 2021

Hands-on science home activities PLUS virtual small group meetups

Registration is open!

Based on parent feedback the Science of Fun has created a Camp-in-a-Box which includes custom Science of Fun hands-on activities PLUS small group virtual meetups. Our mission is to give parents a much-needed break, for kids to have a fun and enjoyable summer, and to facilitate a deep love of science in our young campers.

Our hands-on activities are appropriate for all students ages K-5th and are designed to appeal to a wide range of interests. Each box contains FIVE full hands-on, unplugged activities including easy-to-follow video tutorials with lab instructions. View a sample HexBug lab, here!

What is the Science of Fun Camp-in-a-Box?

  • All the specialized materials needed to complete each activity

  • Instructions and easy-to-follow video tutorials that you can connect to anytime

  • Some special surprises just right for every young scientist

What types of activities are included?

The Science of Fun has chosen highly-engaging activities that lend themselves to at-home science. They are appropriate for all campers ages 5-9 and are designed to  appeal to a wide range of interests. We have developed four themes:

Curious Colors: a bright spot in your summer- cyanotype prints, fascinating acid/base color change, marbleized paper with shaving cream, and Hex Bug habitats

Enriching Experiments: NEW FOR 2021! owl pellet dissection, magnetic sculpture, bottle rocket cars, and dancing sprinkles!

Families who are rescheduling from 2020 in-person summer camps to the reduced-cost virtual camp may choose two virtual camps for each 2020 in-person camp that you are rescheduling.

Payments, Cancellations, and changes updated for 2021:

At registration, families only pay a non-refundable camp deposit ($50/camper per session) plus a $5 non-refundable registration processing fee. All camp changes ($25 admin fee) and cancellations are due before May 1. On May 1, the remaining camp tuition will be charged and becomes non-refundable. As a small business operating during a pandemic we are unable to issue cash/credit card refunds; refunds are always given in the form of SOF credit. See the full details, here.

How do we register for camp-in-a-box?

  • For new families, the virtual camp registration is here

  • If you are rescheduling a cancelled 2020 camp due to COVID and want to move to a virtual 2021 camp, please reply here and we will make the change for you.

How do parents receive the materials?

Materials will be available for pickup the Friday before each camp from 4:00-5:00 p.m. at the Science of Fun. Alternatively, you may have your materials delivered within 5 miles ($5 delivery fee).

I live further away, can the materials be mailed to me?

Likely, yes. If you need to have your materials mailed, please reach out to us at (families pay postage + $5). Mail is only an option for families who register for camp at least two weeks in advance.

What age is this intended for?

The boxes are created for students ages 5-9, our youngest campers will need parental assistance to complete.

Does my child have to attend the LIVE virtual portion?

No, the schedule of virtual experiences will be provided at the start of each camp session but they are not mandatory. Your camper is welcome to join in as many, or as few, as they wish.

What types of virtual activities can we expect?

  • Engaging, age-appropriate explanations of the hands-on labs

  • High-interest “WOW” demonstrations and labs performed by Science of Fun scientists

  • Read-aloud sessions

  • Physical recess breaks using resources such as GoNoodle

  • Friendship-building break-out groups and themes

  • Games and time to share

What is the daily schedule?

Students use printed instructions and SOF-created videos to complete the activities during the day at their own pace. Campers meet virtually each afternoon to discuss and share their creations and join in virtual activities (families are sent a schedule).

Will the LIVE virtual portion be with a large group of kids?

Campers will be divided into small groups so that they receive personalized attention; they may request to be in the same group as friends.

Can my camper do the activities in any order?

The box will indicate a suggested daily schedule and some virtual experiences are tied directly to the activities. Campers who follow the suggested schedule may benefit the most from our virtual activities.

What are parents saying?

“I just want to say how much he enjoyed this week. I think it was the best time he's had during this whole thing. He said he especially likes the calls when they can all talk to one another. :) I'm sure it's a nice break to talk to other kids. He's been able to follow the videos very easily and is having a great time. Thank you for this.” father of 7 yo camper

“If there’s space they’d love to be part of next week as well. They are really enjoying it and especially getting to do the activities on their own vs having to wait on live instruction! Thank you so much! And, I know these are crazy times and the summer got off to a rough start but, under the circumstances, I think you nailed it with the virtual platform you created! Thank you. We hope to be able to be in person in July but if not, we’ll definitely be up for more camp in a box!” mom of sibling campers ages 6 and 9

“We had so much fun outside with the Alka -rockets that we didn’t realize the time and missed the meeting. L--- had so much fun this week!! We would love to do the other one if you are offering it again this summer. There had been some mention of extending camps since schools are going back late. If you do, we would definitely be interested in the Designer’s Delight box, too. Thank you so much for all the fun!!!! We were so sad he had to miss the last meeting.” Mom of 6 yo camper

“We did the camp in the box and my kids had a blast. My 3 year old even was able to participate in some of the projects. We really appreciated this flexible option while we continued to social distance. Thank you!” Mom of 8 sibling campers, 8 and 6

“We've had so much fun with the camp-in-a-box activities this summer, you guys are doing an outstanding job! These virtual camps have been so much fun for us to do the activities on our own time. I never would've guessed that this option would work for us, but it really has been a wonderful option!” Mom of siblings who usually attend in-person, boys age 7 and 9

“I wanted to write to thank you and the people that worked with J---.  I think he really enjoyed it.  I was also happy he had a chance to interact with others in English only.  I think it will go faster once he is in school. But I have no doubt that his experience with the zoom meets will make him more comfortable and confident.  Again, please thank the teacher that worked with him.  I always heard her being so kind and patient with him. We really enjoyed the past two weeks and I am sure we will participate in other activities in the future.” ESOL camper, age 6
